How many calories are there in alcohol?
All types of alcohol have calories, even a classic shot of vodka. Alcohol has 7 calories per gram to be exact. The more concentrated your cocktail is, or the higher the proof of the liquor you use, the more calories it will have in it. If you are trying to stay fit or even lose weight, we would recommend going for a quality cocktail over quantity.
Calories in spirits
Liquors such as Rum, Brandy and Vodka all have the same amount of calories because of their similar basic contents. A shot of 45 ml (1.5 oz) of Rum, Brandy, or Vodka – or almost any other unsweetened, distilled alcohol has a mere 65 calories. That’s 20 calories more than a slice of fried bacon. In comparison a standard five percent alcopop bottle contains 237 calories, which is equivalent to about three teacakes.
Calories in white and red wine
A 250ml (8.5 oz) glass of red wine contains about 225 calories, roughly the amount of a 45g chocolate bar – meaning that if you drink a few glasses a week, you consume an extra 2000 calories in a month. Over the course of a year this, surprisingly, is equivalent of eating 185 packets of crisps. Both red and white wines are equally calorific.
A 175ml (6 oz) glass of red or white wine can contain as much as 160 calories, while champagne in a 125ml (4 oz) glass contains only 89 calories.
If you’re a white wine lover, you can easily cut down on the calories you’re drinking by pouring half of your glass of wine over ice and filling it the rest of the way with club soda. Club soda has zero calories, so you can basically enjoy two wine cocktails for the same number of calories in one glass of wine.
Calories in Beer and Cider
A pint of lager contains as many calories as a slice of pizza which is roughly 180 calories.
- Beck’s Pilsner – 138
- Budweiser – 145
- Bud Light – 110
- Carlsberg Elephant Beer 216
- Carlsberg 141
- Guinness Draught – 126
- Heineken – 148
- Heineken Light – 99
- Labatt Blue – 153
- Miller Genuine Draft – 143
- Sierra Nevada Bigfoot – 330
Not to forget that larger like any kind of alcohol, stimulates the appetite and make calorific post-pub fare like kebabs and chips look really appealing.
If you thought Cider was better, you are wrong as one pint of cider contains 210 calories, meaning if you drink two pints, you will have consumed roughly the same amount as a Big Mac burger from McDonalds.
The calories in alcohol are metabolized first by the body, ahead of burning fat – which is not desirable if on a weight loss diet.
